"New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

First of all, when I read other post I do not understand what most are saying so when you answer my question could you use small words?

I have a website that I want, when people go to the splash page, to be able to see new products. I see when I add products it asks me if I want it to be on the new produt page and I need to say YES. But what coding do I need to put on my splash page to make it work? When I go to "Manage HTML Pages (System)" and copy and past what is under Page Content at "Update HTML Page (System)" it doesn't say "New Products" on teh splash page and it also shows the short description instead of the "add to cart" button. Am I making sense?

Also how do I make my postage work correctly? Now that they have the new postage rates, my customers get errors and get the default shipping? How do I fix that?

I'm so confused!

thanks,
Erica

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

Can you give us a URL so we can see the splash page issue?  There is a setting under Global Settings -> Manage Store Settings that controls whether the products on the splash page have an add button.  Look for "Store Splash Page - Product Display Type" and "New Items Page - Product Display Type".  There are several different settings there, a couple of which have add to cart buttons.  As far as the postal rates, there was a change to USPS a couple months back... if you use the forum search function, I believe you'll find the post with what changes are required.

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

OK. I'll search for the USPS rate change.

Let's see if I can make myself more clear. My url is: http://snuggleyou.com/ccp51/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi See how under Items it shows certain items. Is there a way to insert the new items or are new items only something that would be accessed by a page like http://snuggleyou.com/ccp51/cgi-bin/cp- … pg=ste_new

See, I put what was under Page Content  in "Manage HTML Pages (System)=>Online Store - New Products" in my splash page coding: Was that not right?

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

Regarding the shipping discussion when I search I keep finding posts that talk about the new shipping info but I'm not finding that thread. Does anyone have a link to it?

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

I'm not sure how you'd get new products onto the splach page, to be honest with you.  The line:

Code:

(CGIGET TYPE="SUB" VALUE="ste_prod_disp")

does show the products.  But when you're on the splash page, it shows products that are set to be shown on the splash page - the same call would show new products only if it appears on the new product page.  You could search the forum to see if there's been a hack to bring the new products to the front page - there might well be - but its not something that's part of the base install, to the best of my knowledge.

As far as the USPS rate quote issue goes, there was a discussion of it in .  I believe a solution was presented, but it requires modifying one of the PERL files.  If you aren't comfortable editing the core PERL files, you might want to put in a support ticket with Kryptronic or one of the certified support partners.

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

Hi Erica

Try this - link https://forum.kryptronic.com/viewtopic.php?id=5655

Read all of the post as there is info on placing specials and best-sellers on the splash page and just new items - i have used this before and it has worked.  i think u can use it on most pages.

Back up files first - b4 changing them.

Good luck

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

So I was able to find this:

webmaster wrote:

Use this code in your HTML Page (System) for the store splash page:

Code:

<!-- create a temp variable to house the current page name -->

(CGIGET TYPE="SUB" VALUE="ste_exec_varchange" PARAMS="fd_pg_temp|(CGIVAR)fd_pg(/CGIVAR)")

<!-- change the current page name to 'ste_specials' -->

(CGIGET TYPE="SUB" VALUE="ste_exec_varchange" PARAMS="fd_pg|ste_specials")

<!-- run the product display listing - now as specials -->

(CGIGET TYPE="SUB" VALUE="ste_prod_disp")

<!-- change the page variable back to the original page based on what's in the temp variable we created -->

(CGIGET TYPE="SUB" VALUE="ste_exec_varchange" PARAMS="fd_pg|(CGIVAR)fd_pg_temp(/CGIVAR)")

Then, in the file ./cgi-bin/library/modules/ste_prod.pl in the routine 'ste_prod_disp', make the following changes:

Replace:

Code:

} elsif ($fd_pg eq "ste_specials") {

$sql_statement = "

$sql_select_string
WHERE product_special='Y'
$sql_limit_string

";

With:

Code:

} elsif ($fd_pg eq "ste_specials") {

$sql_statement = "

$sql_select_string
WHERE product_special='Y'
ORDER BY RAND()
LIMIT 4

";

Note:  This will only work if the product table is in MySQL.  There is no RAND function available for CSV files.

Now, I get where it says to change the coding in the first block but what about changing in "in the file ./cgi-bin/library/modules/ste_prod.pl"? What is it and how do I do it? and how do I know if my product table is in MySQL or CSV? In my cPanel I have a MySQL but all the changes I make are thru the CCP part not in my cPanel?

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

Changing the PERL files, like ste_prod.pl, requires downloading the file with an FTP program, making the changes with a text editor, and then uploading the changed file.  Always make sure you have a backup before you modify a PERL file in case you make a mistake and be aware that if you mess up, it could bring down your site.  Also, it is very important that PERL files be transfered in ASCII mode in your FTP program.

MySQL vs. CSV is handled in the CCP admin area, under Database Utilities.  If you have never gone there and set up a MySQL connection, then you are still running in CSV mode (the default).  If a connection has been set up, you can check under Manage Table Data Sources to see in what mode each table is running.

Re: "New Products" on splash page, how to make it so plus USPS question

When I go under Manage Table Data Sources I get "Currently, you do not have an active alternate RDBMS connection configured. Before you can manage the data sources for your tables, you will need to establish an alternate RDBMS connection using the 'Configure RDBMS Connection' function."

Because that statement is just a bunch of giberish to me, lol, I think it would be easiest and safest if I just skip the whole new products by random and change them myself. I probably could do it since I do have the FTP program, but I think I'll just save myself the hassle...

In that case, you would need to create a database through cPanel, set up the database connection under Configure RDBMS Connection, change the tables data source under Manage Table Data Sources... and THEN you could make that mod.  A lot to go through, really.  Running under MySQL is a bit faster, so a lot of people find it worthwhile... but then you also might want to consider that if it ain't broke... well, you know what they say.
