Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

LOL.  I just set the clock on the server to match the US Naval Observatory Master Clock.  I do this every once in a while.  As far as marking all posts in a forum as read, Todd - can you point me to a mod for this?

ALSO:  I just installed an anti-spam mod that checks all new registration and poster IP addresses against the SBL/XBL records at http://www.spamhaus.org.  I checked a sample of the addresses we've identified as spammers and the new system provided positives on some (not most or all) of them.  I will be monitoring this and we will actively combat spam going forward.  If this new SBL/XBL check doesn't do the trick we will implement Akismet on top of it.  I want to see how this goes for a few days, though...

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Hey Nick, love the PM function - thank you for adding it!  I noticed the new board has a lower message limit, so I went to delete some of my old posts and encountered a problem I couldn't solve.  When I clicked the delete link, I was correctly taken to the confirm delete page.  But when I clicked the confirmation button, I recieved the following error:

Bad HTTP_REFERER. You were referred to this page from an unauthorized source. If the problem persists please make sure that 'Base URL' is correctly set in Admin/Options and that you are visiting the forum by navigating to that URL. More information regarding the referrer check can be found in the PunBB documentation.

Is this a problem with someting on my end or is there possibly a configuration issue with the PM plugin?

Thanks!

Hey Nick, if there is a mod to archive PMs, that would be great.
BTW, what is the PM limit now?

Well, I'm not sure if this is what people are looking for or not... but on the front page in the top right corner of the forum, if your signed in, there is a link to mark all forum posts as read.  This will allow for only new posts to show as bolded.

Rachael,

I just did some deleteing without any problem if that helps.

Todd,

I am under the impression that users want the ability to mark an individual post as read and / or pssibly unread to follow up on later.  Can this be achieved?

John

If a user wants to follow-up on something later, why not just subscribe to the topic?  If they don't want to see it again... they won't since it has been marked as read as soon as they read it.

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Todd,

It's only marked read after they log out and log back in ..... if someone is in the habbit of closing the browser but not logging out and saving the settings then nothing gets marked read unless you select to mark all read.

No, on the old forum you could go to each area (say UK Support) and mark that entire area as read.
As it is now, you must mark the ENTIRE site as read.

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

a mod that will allow topics to be tracked, just like the old forum, I had upwards of 30+ topics [posts] that I was tracking, these included topics on mods i have used on my website, mods i was going to use, elc.

would love to have this again, and maybe the old topics that we tracked smile

soz just noticed, pun does have a track this topic.... so if poss could we [ok me] have the list of topics imgrated from the old forum to the new forum.

Thanks for the feedback, John - it made me go back and check out my PC again.  I found the problem, so I thought I'd follow up with the resolution for anyone else that might have this problem.  It turns out my firewall had the privacy settings too strict.  Once I added the forum to my list of unrestricted sites in Zone Alarm (my firewall software), I was able to delete posts without a problem.

Nick,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for updating the forum software! We can now pull RSS feeds into our favorite feed reader to be notified when the forums are updated. That's what I'm talking about!

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Todd-

Can you check and see if there are any mods for marking all posts in a particular forum as read?  I'm not sure if this is possible with Pun as the db doesn't look like it's architected to handle something like that.  Read below concerning subscriptions - the new system should work fine going forward without a subscription mod.

steveblueradio-

Email me about those subscriptions and I'll see if I can dig a list of topic numbers out of IPB for you.  Most of the stuff in the forum migrated and I did the PM migration myself, however subscriptions to posts obviously did not migrate.  Because of the number of bad email addresses subscribed to posts on the old forum and the ability to subscribe to a whole forum, my mail server was literally being hammered while using IPB.  I don't want to migrate the subscriptions over - they should start fresh on this new software.  I can provide you a list, though of your subscribed topics if you email me.

CityWebSystems.com-

Thanks for the comments.  It was time for a change.  I realize most users liked the old forum and got used to it, however going forward PunBB is a much better platform for us to be on.  Maybe one day there will be forum software available for the KHXC that we'll use - but for now I'm liking Pun as much as you are.

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Does PunBB support the full range of BBCode?  I tried using the  tag, but it didn't seem to work - it's also not listed in the documentation, so I'm assuming the answer is no?

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Rachel-  Thanks for that spam report - I just deleted that post.  Look like spam will still be a problem here until I can get another filter running.  Concerning your bbcode question, the supported codes are listed here:

https://forum.kryptronic.com/help.php#bbcode

It looks like a subset of all bbcodes are using in punbb.  List is not in the *list*.

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Thanks Nick!  Don't worry too much about that particular spam - it migrated from the old board and had been up for some time.  We just had no way to deal with it before, so it was left there.  And thanks for the clarification on the BBCode - too bad about the lack of the list function... that was handy for writing up mods.

I have done a bit of searching.  So far these are the closest solutions I can find.

Two Mods that may help.

and

The 'Last Read' mod looks like it was written to replace the 'Mark Topics as Read' mod.  Although the two seem to offer somewhat different but similar functionality.

I have also started a thread in the PunBB forums asking for more help on this subject.  The thread can be found at http://forums.punbb.org/viewtopic.php?id=13177

And Rachel, we can add a 'list mod'.

Talk Nick into it!  smile

It can be found at http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=297

LOL, I don't think Nick can say no to that kind of plea!

On another note, the 'Mark Forums as Read' Mod adds a link to individual forums to 'mark read'.  I just got notice by one of the forum admins.

I like Pun but I also recognize that every software package has its benefits and drawbacks.  Hopefully Pun will serve our needs as we move forward with CCP 6.  Its going to be a wild ride as I see this community and the CCP 6 platform taking off in a big way!

Hello everyone.  I added the mark topics as read and BBcode list mods this morning.  They appeared to test out fine.  Any other requests?

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Thanks Nick!

Quick question on the list mod - Is it possible to modify the CSS so that when list items wrap, the second line indents to match the position of the first?  Very minor issue, I know, but it would improve readability a lot.  Unfortunately, my CSS is a bit on the weak side, so I don't know if/how that would be done.

Thanks,
Rachael

Post a test reply here with a list in it and I'll see what I can do.  I'm not sure if that's possible but I can try...

Re: New Forum Online As Of 09/15/2006

Thanks for trying!  Here is the source code of the test list:

Code:

[list]
[*]List Item 1
[*]List Item with a really long line that will definitely need to wrap because it is just so gosh darn long... boy is this one long list item. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy yellow dog and whizzed all over the ugly brown fence before becoming so completely bored that all it could do is write really really long list items.
[*]List Item 3
[/list]

And here is the result:

Thanks!
