Controlling Catagory & Product Display

I am trying to change the way the catagories are displayed on the store home page.  I have 9 catagories, and it appears that are displayed in the order entered.  The same applies to products.  Is there a way to rearrange the list?  I want to add a catagory in the middle so they are shown together.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

By default the cart sort categories and products according to the ID number.

There are a couple of ways to do this.

1 would be to convert the tables in question to CSV Mode, download the tables via FTP and manually sort them using excel or an equivalent program. Then reupload the tables and convert to mysql or whatever database you're using.
NOTE this would need to be done whenever you add something to the cart.

REMEMBER If you go with the first option make sure to back up and always tranfer csv file in binary mode

Another option would be the sorton mod by ATS. This will allow you to use numbers or names or some other sequence to sort your categories.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

Ok.  I had trouble before with downloading the csv file for the maillist, it got corrupt and we had to start over.  Too much time put into the database to risk that again.  I will look into the ATS mod. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

I installed this mod and it works great for the catagories listing on the right, but it doesnt affect the product catagories displayed with catagory graphics in the center of the online store page?  Is there a way to control or rearrange that too?  This was really what we wanted to accomplish in the first place.  TY for any help.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

Then look at this mod in Cool Mods and Hacks titled Order Products By X Field which is what I am also useing on my site.

There is a part where they want you to replace the secound time a "if ($related ne "" ---) part that I didn't do because it called more products than I wanted to display on page (about 40 or so) since I had it set in my admin to display 10 items per page.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

I am trying to order the "Catagories" displayed on the online store page, not the products within the catagories. Can this mod do that?

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

Yes this can be done. It is done much like the products but it is done to the category table. If you have access to database Utility and you are running in MySql you can sort by any column. If you do not you can convert to csv mode through the admin and download the category.csv from your table directory. Remember to back it up and always transfer csv files in Binary mode.  I find this to be the best way without paying for a mod if you have a specific order in mind. For example if you sell candy and you have three categories such as Dark Chocolate, white chocolate and milk chocolate you may want milk chocolate the be the first on the page. You can accomplish this by manually adjusting the csv file.

Remember though the order will remain as you set it, any category you add will be placed at the end. Therefore without a sorting mod you would need to manually redo the previous steps if you wanted the new category at the top.

John

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

Hey Iceit88,

Thanks for pointing out the link. I hadn't seen that before and it would certainly be a better solution than mine unless like I said, you have a specific category order you want that has no aplha-numeric order.

Re: Controlling Catagory & Product Display

JPL,  If you add a column to the DB, then follow KAZ's post to avoid errors, you can add whatever number, letter or code you want to use and sort on.
