Make Checkout Secure Or Not?

Hi,

Firstly, I take no card details on the checkout page. These are handled by WorldPay's secure payment page.

I have had the online store for over 3 years and only up until about 1 month ago I never used a secure checkout. No one ever said anything, until one day a customer mentioned it. I then looked into it and now use the secure page provided by my host.

The problem is that it slows the checkout down. It must be annoying for customers on a slow connection. So, my question is:

Should i stick with the secure checkout or go back to unsecure, but faster checkout?

Re: Make Checkout Secure Or Not?

IMHO with all the security issues online currently, as a customer, I would not want to put any personal information such as name, address and phone number not to mention my CC without being on a secure site.

HTH,

John

Re: Make Checkout Secure Or Not?

Thanks for your input John.

I have been seriously toying with the idea of removing the secure cart. I guess I'm not surprised to hear someone on a forum such as this say they wouldn't feel comfortable on an unsecure checkout. Whether the average web user would be bothered or not, I don't know? Of course CC info must be on a secure site, but I use WorldPay for that.

However, I think I will be sticking with the secure checkout. I was just curious what people on here thought.

Re: Make Checkout Secure Or Not?

I dont understand why it is slow, all my cart projects have been setup secure, and they are just fine.  Sounds to me like a server setup problem.  I build my sites without the security and test them, then at the final stages add the secure layer.  I link the primary website to a separate secure.whatever.com url for store functions. The speed is the same before I add the security as after.

I would never enter personal info into a non-secure site.

Heres a link for a project I am just finishing up, test the speed for yourself... (the domain name is temporary, just using empty server space for the non secure portion until we are ready to go live)
