Emergency! https problem

HElp! I was using ccp4 for a customer of mine but everytime someone entered there credit card info and pressed submit they would get the 'page can't be displayed' page. Then if they pressed back and resubmitted or hit refrsh it'd work. Butthat is bad for an online shopper to see and my customer was pretty ticked off. I read about a fix in ccp5 that fixed some problems when using apache/ssl/cgi-lib that caused problems when posting form data in an https url.
So I bought and installed ccp5, imported the catalog from 4, got it all perfect , then did a test order and as soon as I entered my credit card info.. my stomache tunred.. the dreaded 'page can't be displayed' error again. I've spent 3 days and $50 bucks trying to fix this for my customer and it is still doing it. ANy recommendations would be much appreciated.
HAs anyone else experienced this? If so how did you fix it? I'm really desperate! Help!!!

Thanks

Dan

Re: Emergency! https problem

Dan-  What does your server error log say the problem is?  I would think an upgrade of Apache SSL server may be in order.  That was a common problem with version 4 because it used cgi-lib.pl to parse form input - which Apache SSL hated, but we use CGI.pm with version 5, and this is the first report of such an issue that I've heard on SSL with CGI.pm.

Re: Emergency! https problem

there is no entry in my server log about it. I even tested it by going to a bad url in one screen, then submitting the form in another and getting the error, and going to another bad url just so I could pinpoint exactly the errors and there was nothing but the two 404 errors.
I'm going to install the same cart on a different server with a different ssl setup and see if I get the same error or not.

All I get is the error page and then it's all ok aftre that.

I'll post back in a bit and let the forum know how installing it on a different set up went.
Thanks

Dan

Re: Emergency! https problem

After days of intense work here's what I'be founf regarding this problem :

Both version 4 and 5 had this problem :

I double checked all dns / apache http.conf settings. All good.

I installed ccp5 on a completely different server and got the same error.

Both servers had different ssl software one was mod_ssl and the other was Raven I beleive.

I installed a non ccp script to post a form to on both servers.

Both of those scripts had the same problem : namely intermitten seemingly random 'page can't be displayed/dns error' pages when trying to post form data.

That, to me rules out ccp causing the problem, also the servers because they both had it happening.

So I did a little research and guess what? Some versions of IE have a hard time handling form posts in https!

Here's a note form Microsoft themselves about it :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as … us;Q247367

there were plenty of other posts as well about it. Doesn't seem to happen with the netscape I tied and different version of IE experienced it more often than others.

If only Microsoft stuff actually worked then maybe we'd have something!

Thanks for all of your help and I hope this will help someone else.

BTW what I did to aid customers is put a message in red right above the submit button explaining that some browsers have trouble posting forms in https so they may have to hit refresh, I also changed the methoid from POST to GET on the credit card form. That way if they get the error they can push refresh (instead of having to press back and resubmit, I know it's no big deal but shoppers don't want to have to mess with stuff like that and they shouldn't have to ) and it will send them off. Otherwise if they push refresh when they get that error it may( And did for us on our tests ) send them back to the homepage!

Everyone have a good one!

Re: Emergency! https problem

Thank you very much for posting back to the forum on this.  This info is very valuable and I'm sure I'll be pointing people to your well explained and researched documentation on the matter.  I only wish there wasn't an issue.

Re: Emergency! https problem

Actually, I am using MacOS X with Safari 1.2.1 and experiencing the same problem. Refreshing seems to fix the problem, but is very disconcerning. Anyone have ideas to kill this problem?

By posting your URL as well, you could have a better answer.

Re: Emergency! https problem

Is this on all CCP installs, or just on certain servers?  We need to narrow down whether it's a server, browser or software issue before we can figure out how to correct it.
