UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

What would cause a carrier such as UPS and USPS to consistently return an error for certain zip codes when quoting shipping?  I've had some clients be able to push through orders that aren't calculating shipping from UPS or USPS instead returning the "Shipping Error" carrier name and amount alternative from Store>Settings>Shipping Settings.

It doesn't seem to affect all zip codes but does affect UPS carrier rates and sometimes both UPS and USPS rates.

What can we look at to see if there is a communication error to the carriers or something else going on? Thank you

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

Since you're on our hosting platform and we've seen no errors or issues with other clients using those services, and your ratings are normally coming back, and both are failing at the same time, we can assume it's a data issue.  I've seen this happen when customers enter a wrong/incorrect zip code.  This sometimes happens because the commonly used zip databases don't have what the locals are using for their zips (like old changed codes).  Many times you can take the zip entered and search for it using Google to determine whether or not it's valid.

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

Thanks for getting back to me!

If I set the Shipping Error Amount to a value over $0.00 to remedy this scenario will a customer who has free shipping over a certain dollar amount still get free shipping or does this act as though it gets a delivery rate of that amount regardless?

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

Nevermind.... My question just got answered.  A customer called me asking why they have to pay a shipping cost when they are set for free shipping.

Further on the UPS Rates.... It's happening with nearly every order now coming back with the shipping rate error and defaulting to $0.00 which we have set because of our free shipping customers.

Should I submit a ticket for this?

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

I think we might be figuring out a pattern with the UPS rates resulting in a error.  We had another order where the customer entered an incorrect zip code that returned a shipping error and she was able to checkout and her payment went through from the credit card company as a complete AVS match even though the zip code she used doesn't exist anywhere. When looking up the customer's "correct" zip code and testing with shipping estimator all of the correct UPS rates are coming back.

I'm not sure if this is the case with all of the affected orders.

Does UPS send back any codes on their most recent connection that would tell us if a zip code is invalid or any other address validation?  I thought there might be some type of address verification already built into K9 that determines if an address is residential or commercial.

Any suggestions about how we should proceed with the UPS shipping rate errors that seem to be far more common than in the past?

Could this be related to UPS migrating merchants from legacy SOAP/XML endpoints to the new RESTful API with OAuth 2.0 authentication?

Thank you

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

UPS doesn't send a rate back if the zip is wrong.  They can't rate a shipment with a bad zip.  Check under your shipping settings to see if you have an error method name and price set.  That's likely what's being charged in checkout.  If your shipping error method name contains the word 'error' in it, K9 will block checkout with a bad address error.  Otherwise it will use the error method name and price for the shipping and will let the customer place the order.

Re: UPS Shipping Rate Error - Some Zip Codes

Thanks for getting back to me!

I checked settings and I apparently had the verbage set to "Shipping Rate TBD" so that might have been why this happened.  I changed it to "Shipping Rate Error" assuming that it should now block checkout in K9 due to bad address sector as you stated above.

It's amazing how many people don't know their own address because we've seen this quite a bit over the past several years.  Thank you for your help Nick smile

Tell me about it.  And it's getting worse.
