Google Consent Mode

Hi Nick

Do you know anything about Google's Consent Mode?
They keep telling me I haven't adopted it yet. Not sure if it is just a European thing.

It seems GTag needs to include information about the users cookie choice, otherwise it will default to denied and won't allow tracking.

Thanks

Re: Google Consent Mode

We are currently working on an massive/major update to Analytics and GTM for version 9.4 which should be out within a couple of weeks.  We have come across the consent mode but were reading it as an optional opt-out of cookie-based tracking rather than a required opt-in.  Do you have a snippet of the message they're sending/presenting to you?

Re: Google Consent Mode

ACTION RECOMMENDED
Action needed: You still haven't adopted consent mode
Businesses advertising to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) must create a strong framework to collect and communicate end-users' consent choices with consent mode. Build a strong foundation for measuring your ads with consent mode.
Adopt consent mode

What is consent mode?
When you set up Consent mode, you'll be able to communicate user consent required on Google's advertising platforms, while respecting user choices and meeting Google's EU user consent policy.

Why it's important
As of March 2024, advertisers must adhere to the EU user consent policy to use personalisation features. In 2024, our enforcement action will also start impacting measurement features. To keep your ads measurement working, you must implement consent mode to share consent signals with Google.

How to get started
Contact one of Google's consent management platform (CMP) partners to effectively gain and communicate end user consent choices and to learn more about their tiered solutions and pricing structures.
Your foundation for privacy readiness
Maintain the effectiveness of your campaigns and put Google AI to work for you with these products. Used together, they will help you make decisions with confidence and deliver long-term performance for your business. You'll receive future emails on how to complete your roadmap.

Re: Google Consent Mode

Perfect.  Thanks.  We'll be sure to address this with the pending 9.4 release by sending consent signals over.  The newer GA4 and GTM integrations are all event based so this won't be a big change.

Once 9.4 is released, please ping me in the ticket system regarding your upgrade.  9.3 introduced custom code isolation, and I want to assist you in ensuring your customized build is set up to handle that with your 9.4 upgrade.  That will make future upgrades much, much, much easier for you as there will be no need to merge custom code - just to update it post-install if necessary (ie overridden files changed or logic changed).
