cPanel KernelCare

Hi

Does anyone have experience of cPanel KernelCare and if it is worth subscribing to?

Re: cPanel KernelCare

I hadn't heard of it before you posted.  I took a look and it's a cool concept.

We run Interworx here, which is similar to cPanel, and have the same issues - where the kernel needs to be updated independently of the control panel software.  In our case, though, we maintain different versions of our own software for clients hosted on a variety of machines on which kernel and PHP updates need to be controlled, and in some cases limited.  For example, we still maintain one CentoOS5 server capped at PHP5.1.2 in order to be able to temporarily host and upgrade clients with V7.1.2 and lower software moving to K9.

I would think this KernelCare product would work well for a dedicated machine where you kept the software you are running fully up to date (latest K9, latest whatever).

Talk to somebody who works in a data center and does kernel upgrades.  Typically they go off without a hitch, but sometimes there are issues that require expert know-how.  Is automating that a recipe for disaster?

This product is available likely as a result of the Spectre and Meltdown exploits documented earlier this year.  Wonder if it's more marketing than anything.  FYI, all production Kryptronic Managed Hosting servers have been updated/patched and are hardened against these already.

Just some random thoughts.  I'd talk to our data center guy before doing anything like this.

Re: cPanel KernelCare

Thanks for the advice. My main concern was that it might update the server and break the cart. It is a pain to keep wet nursing the server so for US$3 pcm I have decided to give it a try. Will let you know how it works out...

Re: cPanel KernelCare

Early days still but it does appear to be worth US$3 per month as it provides symlink protection and the server seems to be looking after itself so that's one less thing to do :-)

Re: cPanel KernelCare

Thanks for the update.  Please watch your PHP upgrades, and how they affect the site.  Generally we're ahead of the PHP releases by quite a bit before they get put into cPanel distribution.  Very glad to hear you're liking it so far.

Re: cPanel KernelCare

These are the versions the server is currently at. Are they OK for K9?

cPanel Version     72.0 (build 10)
Apache Version     2.4.34
PHP Version     7.0.31
MySQL Version     5.6.39
Perl Version     5.16.3
Kernel Version     3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64

PHP versions 71 and 72 are available if better.

Re: cPanel KernelCare

PHP 7.0 is as high as it's been run in a test environment.  I've just checked:

http://php.net/manual/en/migration71.incompatible.php
http://php.net/manual/en/migration72.incompatible.php

It looks like they changed a lot between 7.0 and 7.2, but nothing looks like it would affect any functionality in K9.  If possible, during a light traffic cycle, update to 7.2 and see if there are any issues.  FYI, we're seeing most servers with 5.6 installed by default now, so you're ahead of the curve with 7.0.
