Changing Category Sort
Hello,
The list of categories for my store, located on the left side of the screen is sorted alphabetically. I went into the Admin, and changed the Sort Order number to 9 for a specific category. This did not change the sort order on the list. Am I missing something?

Would the change to 9 for the sort order of that category actually changed it's order in relation to the sort order for all of the other categories?
If so, and you were using all stock widgets and code, then the sort order change should have affected the order in which it was presented. This leads me to believe your category widget is non-stock, or your category list is hardcoded or pulled without a widget in your skin.php file.

All of the fields are set to 1, so I assumed that 9 would either put it first or last, but it didn't change it

I believe the include file is <?php //$skinfunc->xnamespace('core','skinwidgets','NAVMENU'); ?> ?
