Ok everyone you are probably just as excited as I am about the new CCP5 that should be released on the 5th. I have been assisting with some of the Database/SQL testing.
So far you will have 6 variations of RDBMS's to choose from:
MySQL:
This can be used on Unix and Windows platforms. You shouln't have a problem hosting on windows and connecting to a Unix MySQL server or vice versa.
MSSQL, MSACCESS:
This should only be able to be used on windows platforms. I'm sure someone out there will really enjoy this on the windows platforms.
PostgreSQL(Unix DBD-Pg and ODBC on Win32:
Both Windows and Unix support. On windows it uses the Free OBDC driver to connect to a PostgreSQL server hosted on unix. And on the unix to unix connections you use DBD-Pg module to connect to the server.
CSV(Flatfile):
Never fear flatfile is here also. They didn't drop support for this wonderful solution for the folks that don't have the time or want to use a SQL or other DB servers.
The really neat part about this setup is it will switch between the RDBMS's dynamically from the Admin area. Say you switch from CSV to MSSQL. You input the server address, username and password and it automagically imports and creates the Databases for you in MSSQL. If you happen to switch back to CSV later down the line it will export the data from MSSQL back to CSV for you without having to think twice about it.
And you can pick and choose what is hosted from the DB. Say you just want to host your products DB from an RDBMS you can choose to host just that portion of your store from the DB.
Thus far what I have seen had made me really excited for the final product to make it to market. The admin interface is a bit reworked and in my opinion looks nicer. They have a bit more work before its complete but guys its on a good track. I wouldn't be mad if they had to delay till the next monday because of the holiday.
I give the guys two thumbs up on this release so far.
Post questions and comments.
Thanks,
