New Image Sizes

What are the recommended image sizes for the new version?  Will they still be tagged as small, large and extra-large?

Re: New Image Sizes

Just small and large, no extra large, as the large images are big enough.  Here are some guidelines:

(1) Use .jpgs wherever possible, and run compression on them at around 50%.  Use a lossless compression tool where available.  Be sure to get images optimized and looking good.

(2) Main banners now use three sizes of images.  The default, and the only one required is the 'mid' image.  If the other two aren't uploaded the 'mid' image is used for those views.  These widths are assuming you're stretching the banner full screen and not limiting it to the content area.  You can go larger on the mid and not use the wide if you contain your main banners to a smaller area than the whole screen width.

Main Banner Mid (Tablet): Recommended width 700px
Main Banner Thin (Mobile): Recommended width 500px
Main Banner Wide (Desktop): Recommended width 1100px

Banner adverts (smaller rotating skin widget banners) are to be small, unless you're doing a wide banner widget and feeding the rotation in there.

Banner Advertisement: Recommended width 500px

(3) Tiny images are used for inventory items, and only one is used.  These show up in category feature grid displays, when inventory items are shown as choices for a product offer, and in the cart.

Inventory Item: Recommended width 150px

(4) Product images come in two sizes now.  If you're going from V8 to V9 you might be able to dump your V8 extra large images in your V9 large image directory, and your V8 large images into the V9 small image directory and be good to go.

Small Product Image: Recommended width 500px
Large Product Image: Recommended width 800px

(5) Category and Manufacturer images come in one size, which is the same as small product images.

Category Image: Recommended width 500px
Manufacturer Image: Recommended width 500px

Re: New Image Sizes

Does V9 use imagemagic or any other plugin to handle resizing for you?

Re: New Image Sizes

No, it does not.  We've reduced the number of images from three down to two for products, and most people I imagine will just run all their product images at 600px as it's easiest to do that.

Re: New Image Sizes

Hi nick

Just prepping some images here. You mention image width above. Am I ok to presume that height will be the same (ie square images)

Also - lossless compression tool - any good ones that you would recommend?  I've never used one of those.

Re: New Image Sizes

Image width is all that's important.  Use a uniform height of your choosing.  Square is popular these days, so if these are fresh images, go with that.  You could also choose a height that's 9/16 the width and go pure letterbox.  Or standard 3/4.  Your choice.

I have no need to do lossless compression in batch, so online tools work great for my needs.  I used the following to losslessly compress the demo images, including the sprites, banners and category/product/inventory item images:

https://tinypng.com/

You can do a bunch at a time and dragging and dropping from your file manager over to the drop area on the website works great.  You can drop multiple files there at once.  I've noticed output is always half the size or more of whatever I put in, and I'm usually dropping in JPGs that Photoshop optimized to 50% (images I would have considered compressed and ready for web before lossless compression came to be).

I would use Irfanview, you can tweak the settings

Re: New Image Sizes

In V9, what is the largest size product image that can be displayed fully (i.e., not by a magnifier type of feature that shows only a portion of a larger image)?

Re: New Image Sizes

Depends on your site design.  Assuming you have a full width skin running, and you're viewing the site using a big monitor, let's say 1600px wide in resolution, the large image would be displayed at around 750px wide on the page, might go to 1400px or so when viewed in a modal.  But only if the image is that wide.

Re: New Image Sizes

Following up on #2 above:

150px goes in invsm
500px goes in prodsm
800px goes in prodlg

??  Please confirm.

Also is there a place in the admin where you can set the default size of images, especially in category listings?  Or is that all in the skin/css now?

Thanks,
Nathan

Re: New Image Sizes

That is correct, the image sizes listed in post 2 are correct.  As this software is responsive, there are no hard limits on image sizes and no settings used to control them.  Instead, control the number of items displayed per row in the different modes (tablet, desktop) to get the images sized the way you want them.
