Using the Postgre Database with v9
Can v9 use the Postgre database as its only database?

Yes, versions 5 and higher all support both MySQL and Postgre. We may be dropping support for Postgre at some point, though, as it's not used very widely at all and it might be nice to go MySQL-only to open up a few more tools for us.

Over the next two years we're going to have 25,000+ ASIN's tied to quite a number of multi-sites. Of course each website is likely to have many product options on top of that.
How many ASIN's X Stores X Product Options do you think MySQL can handle before needing to go to something like Postgre?
Or do you think it is read/write volume that is relevant?

Please be aware that V9 has two separate functionality additions:
(1) eCommerce Channels: The online store is considered the DEFAULT channel. eBay and Amazon can be added as additional channels (EBAY and AMAZON). Channels are used to present product offers for inventory items (browse online store, list on ebay, list on amazon) and to handle order management, which in the case of the eBay and Amazon channels means downloading the orders into the system, processing them, and supplying eBay and Amazon with final order updates and shipping info.
(2) MultiSite: Allows you to run the online store (read: DEFAULT eCommerce Channel above) over multiple URLs with different skins, settings, products, categories, etc, etc, etc. Effectively giving your online the ability to present itself as multiple different stores over different URLs. The base URL/install is considered the DEFAULT MultiSite.
The eBay and Amazon eCommerce Channels run under the DEFAULT MultiSite. They are tied into your eBay and Amazon accounts directly, so their storefronts are your eBay and Amazon storefronts. For order processing, the orders are considered to have come from the DEFAULT MultiSite.

Now that it's clear what can be sold and how, an ASIN points to one or more Inventory Items in our system, like the package deal example above. These may have options or may not. So the question really is how many Inventory Items can the system handle under MySQL. I would venture to guess the number is somewhere around 1.5 million before it would be time for something a little more heavy duty. The same for ASINs, about 1.5 million, if you're selling at a 1:1 ratio. You can have multiple ASINs pointing to a single inventory item, and multiple inventory items tied to a single ASIN, so it gets a little convoluted giving a real maximum number.
