Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

Hello,

This morning I received an email from Google stating that our website has multiple issues being mobile friendly and will be downgraded by Google if we don't fix the issues.  This comes to a surprise for us as we use CCP 8 and a mobile version of our site comes up on my phone and appears to be very mobile friendly.

Google systems have tested 1,030 pages from your site and found that 100% of them have critical mobile usability errors. The errors on these 1,030 pages severely affect how mobile users are able to experience your website. These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.

Any suggestions as to what could be happening here is very helpful.  Thanks!

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

I got a similar message a few minutes ago.

Mobile Usability
Fix mobile usability issues affecting your site.
Status: 14/03/15
24,825 Pages with errors

1. Viewport not configured, 24,825 pages affected
2. Small font size, 24,825 pages affected
3. Touch elements too close, 24,797 pages affected
4. Content not sized to viewport, 2,029 pages affected

Will this be addressed in v9 or will you have a quick fix for v8 while waiting for v9?

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

As I understand it Google will downgrade our listings immediately if we don't become compliant with mobile friendly.  I didn't worry about this until today because our website has always looked good in mobile version with no complaints from customers.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

Kryptronic is currently working on a fully responsive skin for the next version of our software.  It will be publicly available around the time Google has decided to weight mobile friendliness heavier.  Responsive design is the next level beyond mobile/desktop support and is truly what Google is pushing for across the board with this change.  We've had you covered since version 8 was released with true mobile support, and now we have you covered with responsive design coming your way shortly.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

I run 4 Europcart's and 2 CCP's and have had emails from Google Webmaster tools recently for these 6 websites to say that:

"Google systems have tested pages from your site and found that 100% of them have critical mobile usability errors. The errors on these pages severely affect how mobile users are able to experience your website. These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users."

I saw on another post that it may be possible to address this issue by finding out what user agent Google Webmaster tools is using to view the websites as mobile and then update a session script or something with the Google user agent string to get Google to render the website the same way that my mobile phone does.

Google is such a pain in the arse for small businesses - my mobile phone currently renders the 6 websites correctly but Google have to throw their weight around and use there own user agents or whatever and then dictate how everyone has to change to be compliant with them or be punished!

I would prefer for version 8 to be made Google Mobile Friendly through a code update to a script or similar rather then be forced to upgrade straight away to the next version of CCP/Europacart as I have a lot of custom coding that I have to update on 6 websites everytime CCP is changed to a new version.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

Google reported the same problem for us yesterday as well. As suggested above, can we get a stopgap fix for this? Is there a release date for the new version of CCP?

When I run the site through https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ we get 100 / 100 for User Experience (Congratulations! No issues found.).

Does the Google elbow know what the Google ar5e is doing?

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

sdn: Exactly.  The page speed insights reports are looking at the right thing.  The errors being encountered using the other utility can likely be corrected by the addition of a different viewport tag in the <head> of the mobile skin.  We're developing responsive now, so this is all going to be moot shortly.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

I got the same messages as everyone else.  Outside of CCP we have a lot of pages on our web site I had to put the following code into those pages and also spread some of the links farther apart so the tap object too close error went away....

Add this metatag:
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">

Add this class:

  <style type="text/css">
@viewport { width: device-width; }

Then use the class: in the body statement....

<body class="@viewport">

For picture images, have the width = 315 and they will fit on the smart phones.

I used googles program to test my changes to make sure they come out to 100/100 for mobile and desktop.

Long links will fail, so shorten them up and use "click here" with the link.

Some of the pictures have to optimized so they load faster.

I also had to update my .htaccess file so it would cache pictures and pages on the network.

The above got rid of almost all the issues and my Website pages are mostly all 100/100 mobile / desktop now.   What a pain this was to go through a lot of pages.

I made some changes to CCP skins and they appear to be working better on the smart phone gadgets now.    I've been doing this stuff non-stop for a couple of weeks.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

Well I think we should fix this as is with clear instructions right away and not wait for an update one day.

This is already in the skin:

Code:

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;" />

I added the style and body classification as you suggest Thomas thank you to see if it helps!

As per this thread does core_session.php need updating? https://forum.kryptronic.com/viewtopic.php?id=32423

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

CORE_Session would not need to be updated.  It's not a wait for a new software to update issue at all.  Google's mechanism for checking mobile friendliness through that utility is not working properly (obviously).  Our next release will be responsive, which will make all of this irrelevant, is all I was saying.  I would remove the CSS declarations Thomas posted.  Those are not valid.  They're for a SASS template.  The viewport tag is already in the mobile skin, and already specifies the device width.  Playing with that may satisfy Google's checker.

I did a view source while in mobile mode and the above meta tag was not in the source code.

Re: Google Mobile Friendly Site Issues

That will appear at the top of the mobile skin.  You can add it to the top of the desktop skin if you wish.
