It would save some extra key strokes and help our customers when they go into the checkout function to default the payment type to pay by credit card. Too many people, after they select the payment type, don't realize they need to click on the update cart button. Most people pay by credit card, so why not default the cart to come up to process credit cards? We then avoid the problems our customers are having with the checkout page. They will select the pay by credit card function and then click submit order and then wonder why the cart didn't offer to collect their card. We see this a lot. So, let's default opening the checkout page by having pay by credit card be the default.
The next question is, how can the code be modified to make pay by credit card the default when the cart is first opened?

Alter the sort order of your payment methods under Store > Commerce > Processing Gateways. Move your cc payment option to the top of the list by updating it and giving it a very low sort order.

Excellent! That will stop one of the nagging problems we have been having with several customers. It opens up the checkout form with pay by credit card as a default and the form will be ready for the majority of the customers as they check out.
When we install a new update to CCP, will this be something we have to adjust?
