Menus not appearing

After the upgrade, the menus disappeared.  I didn't change any of the skin files as I'm using the default.  Everything else in the pre and post instructions were followed.

Even the default skin from v7 needs to be updated as per the skin upgrade instructions here:

Or, simply switch to using the new Desktop skin and upload your logo.

Thanks Nick,

I changed to the new desktop skin and it's looking better but the categories are listed across the top rather than the left side, is that the new design?

Also some of the categories are missing. They are all marked to be featured and visible.

You probably have too many to show across the top and that's why you're not seeing them.  Under System | Displays | Skin Widgets, change the category widget's Desktop Display Group to 'SIDEMENU' and the Desktop Display Class to 'skin_widgetclass_SIDEMENU' and it will show on the side.
