ver 8 question installed but lost all widgets
I did the upgrade and made the required raw data changes but I can't get any of the widgets or the category listing to appear on the left or right. Could there be some code from a previous tweak over the year that's interfering. I have the site set to the supplied default skin at this time. There were no widgets showing on the skin that was updated from 7 either. If so what do I need to do to start clean with out loosing my order and customer data.

Hi lgbsteve. Did you follow these instructions for updating your skin?

If so, as you mentioned that you had issues before the upgrade, maybe you want to consider logging into your management interface and accessing the System | Component | Settings | Display Skins function. There, choose 'Desktop' for the skin and upload your logo.
Also, be sure you followed all of the instructions here:

Specifically, the pre-upgrade database changed that need to be made here:

You may not have done them, so the skin widgets didn't import correctly. You'd be safe to run those pre-upgrade database changes again, then re-run the installer. That should fix skin widget issues.

Thanks I had missed the Display Skin Changes file.
I can't seem to find this area though.
Then, in the management interface, access the System | Displays | Skin Widgets function, and change the value for the 'Desktop Display Group' field to 'SIDEMENU' for any skin widgets that you want to appear there.
I go to :System | Displays | Skin Widgets | [widget] But I only see
Component*
Namespace*
Name*
Where do I go to change the positioning?
I also need to now remove your demo skin widget side menu "turbo distortion" and Acoustics. :0)
Where to I find them?

Run the update again. This time make sure you execute all of the pre-upgrade database statements. Do a full load of the database with all files. That should refresh the skin widgets.

That helped some, but I still can't make changes to the widgets in admin. I can do it from mysql. I can live with that.

You shouldn't have to do that. I recommend dropping the core_skinwidgets table from the db, then doing a reinstall, choosing to overwrite all files and doing a full be reload. Also, delete any rows in the core_columndefs table which start with core_skinwidgets prior to the reinstall.

Touched so many files I don't know which did it but ALL is good now.
Now that everything working I will now start playing with all the new toys!
