Database backup

Hi folks

Please forgive a newbie question, but if I create a database backup within CCP7 c/panel, where is that backup stored? Being somewhat paranoid I'd like to have a locally-stored backup just in case the worst happens...

Re: Database backup

The backup in CCP simply creates copies of the tables within the same database. Check the control panel with your hosting provider and see if they offer something like phpMyAdmin which would allow you to create and download a copy of the database.

Re: Database backup

Hi Dave

Thanks for the very fast response. I have phpadmin but can't see how to d/l a backup to my local machine. And even if I did, how would I restore it to the CCP7 installation? Don't I need to do that from within the CCP7 c/panel?
Also, if the backup creates backups within the same database, does that mean the db will eventually become bloated? How do I "remove" those backups?

While looking at the DB in phpMyAdmin use the export tab, select all of the tables and check the "Save as file" box near the bottom. The import tab will allow you to reload the database should you need to.

No

I wouldn't call it bloated but it will grow every time you use the backup function in CCP.

Manually using phpMyAdmin. The backup tables will be pretty obvious.

Re: Database backup

Thanks Dave - the cpanel backup seems to work fine.

>>>Manually using phpMyAdmin. The backup tables will be pretty obvious

They are indeed obvious, but when I try to drop the backup tables I get this error message:
#1051 - Unknown table 'xbak13ej_core_skinwidgets'

Re: Database backup

Bump.
(A very respectful one, in view of the season!)

Any ideas anyone why I get the "unknown table" error?

Re: Database backup

I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like phpMyAdmin doesn't have a current list of the tables for some reason. If you're getting it on a lot of them I'd contact your provider about it.

Re: Database backup

Hi Dave

It happens on all the backup files.  The files are clearly visible/editable etc. within phpMyAdmin.

I'll ask the hostingco.

Happy New Year to you all at Kryptronic and all forum members!
