Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

Can anyone walk me through how to move the Sitemap to the menu on the bottom of the page. I like to squeeze it in between "Terms of Use" and "Contact".

The Sitemap shows up under "Other Products" in the column on the left (currently removed). But I can't keep it there because it doesn't make sense to be listed under Products...

Is there a solution for this?

I don't know off hand what you will need to do to remove it from the menu but the following code added to the bottom of skin.php will put a link in the center of the page. You add the line immediately before the closing </div> for the footer.

<p></p><p><a href="http://www.OutcastGirls.com/sitemap.xml" title="Site Map">Site Map</a></p>

Well that wouldn't be the correct link to the human readable site map Chuck but it's the right basic idea.  Sasha, find where the links at the bottom are being added, most likely somewhere in skin.php and simply add another one that points to site map following the format for the other links.

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

If I follow this logic, will the Sitemap be readable by Googlebot? I don't particularly care about the humans in this case... LOL

My only intend is to please His Majesty The Google and get my site ranked... Currently my Google rank is zero.

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

Dave will correct me if I'm wrong about this but from what I read your don't have to have a link to the site map on your page. The way the site map works is it is submitted to the search engines you select on the SiteMap page. (System Dashboard > System > Component > Settings > Extension Module: SiteMap). I assume it is submitted when the Cron job runs.

Have you enabled the Google Analytics? That doesn't have anything to do with the site map but it is a good tool for tailoring your keywords and tags.

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

Yes, I do have the Google Analytics turned on and the sitemap submitted to the search engines... Is this going to be enough? No need for the actual Sitemap showing on my website?

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

You might also want to look into submitting your products to base.google.com.

John,

I checked out base.google. Is it  recommended submitting the products via Data Feed or API? I'm clueless as usual smile

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

Tell the search engines about your site using a site map is nothing more than a hint for them to use as they may see fit to crawl your site.  It does not mean that they will but, if they do, they'll know where to look.  There's no magic formula that says do x, y and z and you'll show up in the search engines.

It's a matter of well chosen keywords, patience and relevant content.  It may take 6 days, 6 weeks or 6 months before you see any changes in positioning.

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

The most definitive site I've found for discussion of the sitemap and its use is http://www.sitemaps.org/index.php. It explains the format, crawl process, robot files, etc.

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

Thank you all very much! Can anyone tell me where in CCP7 I can find the actual sitemap file (xml) so I can submit it to base.google?

Re: Moving the Sitemap to the bottom

It is created in the root of your site. http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml should find it.
