Just need to know if this is normal or how big a problem I might have:
Orders for both of the payment methods I use (offline cc & check) show up in the orders log when 'submit' is clicked after selecting shipping method (custom) and are still there if 'cancel' is clicked thereafter........ IS THIS DEFAULT BEHAVIOR? Should 'cancel' always delete the order?
No e-mails are sent and both show 'Pending Payment' status

(I tried my best to answer a few before bumping this one!)
Can anyone else using ccp5 let me know if orders cancelled at or after 'Order Review' in checkout still get entered into the orders log as pending payment?

Yes, they do. The Cancel status is done manually. I think that a mod would achieve this for you.

Thanks BooBoo! At least I know it's not malfunctioning.
Now to find a way to at least change to status from 'payment pending' for the pay by check orders as the only way to tell that it's not a valid order is that there won't be a corresponding e-mail; that won't work for the order fulfillment staff.

Why don't you just list the payment method in the manage orders screen by editing the line:
tracking_paymethod,SYSTEM,Payment Method,30,Y,SELECT-TABLE,gateway,,N
To include a 'Y' instead of an 'N' at the end in the file:
./data/tables/config_tracking.csv
That way your admin users will be sure of the payment method and status when reveiwing orders.
