ATS is offering this module as an alternative to several mods on this forum related to search engine optimization.  In my opinion, this is a very complete module that addresses optimization on Apache servers in an efficient manner. 

Because of the nature of the module and the many modifications needed to the base install to make it work, the pricing is reasonable.  ATS will be spending a fair amount of time doing the installation on each server this module is installed.  As we all know, time is money - and that's where the cost is derived from.

Concerning the availability of an SEO module in CCP6 (zuma) (which at this point isn't even in the hands of the beta team), zuma will contain at the very least a process to export pages as static HTML.  There may be a mod_rewrite module available, but that hasn't been confirmed.  Anyone interested in results with search engine optimization, who can't wait for zuma, and who has tried the other optimization mods on the forum, should consider this module from ATS.

Are the changes made to the software content only or are they made to server mods and settings?

Thanks for the questions guys.

This module works with the apache web server only because it does depend on a couple of mod_rewrite rules. Virtually all Linux/UNIX servers run apache. It's possible to run apache on Windows servers as well, but I don't think that is all that common. If you are running Microsoft IIS on a Windows server the module will not work.

The substance of the module exists in a new perl file named ste_seo.pl which goes in the modules directory.

The only thing that is changed as far as server settings are the 2 mod_rewrite rules which are placed in a .htaccess file in your web root directory. Access to the apache  configuration files is not normally needed. I've had one case where mod_rewrite was not enabled on the server, but the web host's tech support enabled it without any hassle.

Minor changes are also made to cp-app.cgi, vars.pl, ste_cat.pl, ste_prod.pl, ste_usr.pl, and each of the HTML elements that are involved in displaying category or product links.

Regarding results in the search engines, the first installs of this module were done a little over a week ago. The pages have not been updated in Google yet. I'm eager to see how they do and I'll post some results when they show up.

I had the mod installed yesterday, and I must say that Mark is fast and goes out of his way to make sure that you get the best possible solution for your site.

He didn't just "install" it for me, he tweaked it without me even asking him to do it.
He looked at what I had, and saw a way to make the mod work even better for me, and made the adjustments accordingly.
That is the kind of thing that you just don't get too often anymore today.
I was hesitant because of the price, but the effort he put forth stripped that right out of my mind.

The install cost is a bargain at twice the price. I can't tell you about the results yet, but I had to tell you about the install. Go for it!

I'm sure the ability to generate static pages that Nick plans to incorporate with version 6 will work on Windows servers.

As far as Windows hosting, I usually steer clear of it, but that's partly because I am much more familiar with administration of Unix servers. I'm curious to see what other comments you get on that.

Unix/Linux does not natively support asp.  But there are add on programs that the Unix/Linux host can purchase that will support asp.  The catch is, the host has to purchase these programs.  I have been in the hosting business using Linux servers for 5 years. I have not had one call for asp support, so guess what?  I won't soon be running out and purchasing the program.  I suspect that you will find most hosts feel this way also, but I could be wrong.  You can check with some of the big boys like Verio to see if they have Unix/asp support, but I think you may have a tough hunt.  But, then again, someone could easily prove me wrong.

You might look for a host that is running Cobalt RAQ4 servers as I remember they came with asp support.  The downside of that is that they are only 500 meg processors.  Not sure about the RAQ5s.

Do we have any search engine results yet? Since most of us add and delete products all the time is there any issues with adding and removing products once this mod is done?

No search engine results (positive or negative) yet.  Google has not updated its listings for the first install sites yet. It is still showing pages from before the module was installed. Same for MSN. I'm checking each day and I'll post some results when I have them. I'm really eager to see how the pages rank.

Regarding adding and deleting products, that is no problem. Everything is automatic and based on the database contents. The new product pages will be optmized just like product pages that existing before the SEO module was installed.

If surfers visit a url that points to a product that no longer exists, they will get a page with category links, etc. so they can still find similar products, etc.
