I have product filters set on most of my products, but I can't seem to find where a customer would access that function in the software. Do I have a setting wrong or something? I just can't find the ability to search using product filters on the website.

If you've enabled filters and have them active for your items, you should see filters appear in the middle of the page for any categories that have standard list displays. Here's an example:
