Search Engine Optimized URL Identifier

Does it matter to Google if the words are separated by a hyphen or underscore?

I was always under the impression that hyphens were the way to go and that is what I've tried to achieve on my website.

It's personal preference.  Consider camel-case as well.  Google handles all well.
