Rich Snippets

Does anyone know if Rich Snippets are worth using with a product based website? Google seems keen on them. I don't think CCP8 supports rich snippets.

Has anyone played with them for products? Are we missing out by not having them on our site?

Re: Rich Snippets

According to most sites I've seen, rich snippets have no SEO benefit at all.  That's why we built opengraph support into v8 instead.

Re: Rich Snippets

Would it be fair then to say that Rich Snippets for V8 is a relative waste of time ?

Re: Rich Snippets

The jury is now out on this one.  Google webmaster tools now reports Structured Data in the Search Appearance area for pages with Rich Snippet content.  We're assuming at some point we'll see the snippet information show up in search results.  It seems to be a slow process.

Re: Rich Snippets

I had a look via WMT at adding microdata with the help of the Google tool but it seems extremely complicated

Re: Rich Snippets

The benefit is not so much SEO as it is in the search display.  If Google (or others) like the page, it will include a picture, review rating, or price.  These little standouts can make a big difference.  It hasn't worked out as well as I hoped, but I'm still working on tweaking it.

Re: Rich Snippets

We run sales on those modules every once in a while.  If you can't wait, submit a free support ticket and we'll see what we can work out.

Re: Rich Snippets

Nick, surely no-one sends the sort of information you are requesting on your level 1 ticket contact form over an unencrypted non-ssl connection?

FTP/SSH Username*
FTP/SSH Password*
Management Interface Username*
Management Interface Password*

I'm not doing it and I suggest no-one else should either.

I'd like the module, and I would sure like a discount, but I'm not sending that sort of info.

Re: Rich Snippets

@magwa: I started a thread on here a while back saying the same thing.

It was deleted ASAP so I was hoping that Kryptronic would have realised their error and made it a secure form...

Re: Rich Snippets

We upgraded the site earlier this year and I forgot to merge that change in.  All our support forms have been converted to SSL (forced).  I apologize for missing that.

Re: Rich Snippets

I installed the Google Rich Snippets XMOD a few months ago and it does not appear to be working.

Here is Google's testing tool:

https://developers.google.com/structure … ting-tool/

When I enter a URL for one of our products I do not see the review, pricing, etc:

http://snakeclamp.com/Item/SCP-HOL-ACU

System Dashboard > Store > Component > Settings > Extension Module: Google Rich Snippets is set to "true"

Please advise.  Thanks.

Re: Rich Snippets

Sorry, but I can't see why yours isn't showing as the xmod does work correctly and the only thing you need to do is activate it here:
Location: System Dashboard > Store > Component > Settings > Extension Module: Google Rich Snippets

You could try disabling the Facebook application you have activated.

Note to Nick,
The html created by the Rich Snippets XMOD has a few unclosed elements
Have a look at the source code here:
https://kryptronic.com/Item/ClickCartPr … e-Software

According to the docs,
<span itemprop="currency" content="GBP" />
should be
<meta itemprop="currency" content="GBP" />

and
<time itemprop="priceValidUntil" datetime="2015-05-15" />
should be
<time itemprop="priceValidUntil" datetime="2015-05-15" ></time>

Code now validates.

Re: Rich Snippets

Thanks for the info on the unclosed tags.  Technically they are self closing tags, but for some reason the W3C validator still complains.  Likely because those tags aren't technically part of the XHTML doctype.  If Google has switched to allowing non-self-closing tags for those elements, I'd like to switch the coding in the module so it does validate.   Are you sure using full (non-self-closing) tags is now acceptable as per Google?  Have you verified results?

I don't even think google are sure about what google does!!

The sample code shows the changes I have made, and it does validate.

Code:

  <span itemprop="brand">ACME</span>
  <span itemprop="name">Executive Anvil</span>
  <img itemprop="image" src="anvil_executive.jpg" alt="Executive Anvil logo" />
  <span itemprop="description">Sleeker than ACME's Classic Anvil, the
