If you're new to paypal they will hold your money up to 21 days, plus high fees don't help.
It's not as good as a merchant account when you have a high sale volume. "Interchange Plus Pricing" is the way to go....IMO

To get something up and running Paypal is still the fast and well known. A lot of merchant accounts still have reserves of 10%. Paypal fees aren't that high and if you don't have good name for yourself many people don't want to enter their credit card details into system they don't know. Plus Paypal has tens of millions of shoppers with accounts and if a shopper doesn't no problem they can simply check out with an account. Also Paypal supports electronic checks, if you want.

I should also add if you go with your own merchant account don't forget you must be PCI compliant and have scans or risk a $50,000 Visa fine and possible termination. No so with Paypal. Things to think about. Merchants accounts are great and like them but Paypal has some advantages too.
In any online transaction, unless you like Amazon, the transaction fees are higher. For example it isn't uncommon for store fronts to get 1.6% for preferred card holders. Online is more like 2.5% although I have had account with 2.35% for card not present transactions.

"If you’re using PayPal Payments Pro, Payflow Pro, or Virtual Terminal, consult our free guide to help ensure that you’re PCI compliant."
In other words you need to be PCI complaint with PayPal Payments Pro, Payflow Pro, or Virtual Terminal. Just like a merchant account.
"PayPal Payments Standard, Email Payments, and Payflow Link*, PayPal handles the payment card information for you. So you don’t have to worry about your buyers’ payment card security or about compliance with PCI DSS for your business."

PayPal has a good shipping interface that is integrated with the major US carriers. I also like their transaction reports.

"PayPal has a good shipping interface that is integrated with the major US carriers" - sounds like PayPal US has more functionality than PayPal UK.

We use PayPal at $30 per month. Had to add SSL to our website first.

SSL on any shopping site is a good idea whether you are take credit cards directly or not. As for the Paypal $30 a month it depends on what plan you choose to use. It is still the easier major processor to get up and running.
