Drop down Menu For Categories

Is it possible to have a drop down menu list of all the (categories) instead of having the categories running all down my page? That just does not look good to me at all mainly because I will have hundreds of categories when I finish setting up my cart. I would like to put the drop down menu up on top right under the logo towards the bottom of that cell.

Am I the only one feeling this way? I am spending way more time then what it is worth looking for documentation on some basic features of this cart. I really wish I would not have bought it. So far it has not been any fun at all.  This cart is nothing without good help files that cover at lease the basic features. I have been coming here to the forum just about everyday looking for answers to some of the most basic question regarding this cart. I have had the cart now for at least some weeks and I am still stuck trying to figure out the basics of the cart. I am so frustrated and disappointed that I may have to take it as a loss and find another cart which really stinks because who wants to lose money. Not me!

Thanks for all the replies in advance.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

I would like a drop down option that you can select if appropriate and also a fly-out list of the sub categories rather than going to a new display page.

The fly-out seems to be a more appropriate method of selecting the sub categories and is used on a lot of sites.

It looks good and is more convenient when someone is just browsing the site categories.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

Yes fly-out would be fanastic, drop-down second favorite but still better than no method to show subcategories.  I also do not want to clutter my menu with multiple categories and need a solution.  Is it my imagination or was there mention in the development discussion that CCP 6 would have fly-out capability?

If so, when will we see something?  Is there someone out there working on fly-out menu as a module?  Will fly-out categories compromise SEO?  Thank you for your response.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

I'll see if I can code something up for this.  CCP6 will support this by allowing you to alter the CSS to your heart's content.  I did at one time (in beta) have flyouts in admin, but they weren't favored by the beta team.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

Thank you Nick.  Can you comment about the timing of this modification code?  is it something you have in your bag of tricks?  I have found an aftermarket CSS flyout menu but would prefer to avoid this added cost if I can.

I am surprised the Beta team would nix a flyout menu option.   This is only meant as a curiosity comment that should be considered right alongside the big bouquets our team throws out to all of you for your work on this kick ass software.

On the admin side flyouts were a royal pain and it was quite easy to miss your target link.  I don't think we ever saw them on the front-end though and they may make more sense there than on the back-end.

But, as with almost everything else, they are a matter of personal preference.  From my perspective they're "nice" but don't really add anything to a site in most cases.  They also have a "cost" in overall page loading time.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

I agree with DJM fly-out on the admin side is not necessary and could be a pain in the preverbal for some administrators however on the front end with sites using a lot of sub-categories I believe the fly-out option is more appropriate.

Timing on the fly-out boxes is the critical thing; we have all experienced fly-outs that are just about unusable. On some sites they can be excessively fast making selection difficult and at times almost impossible. (Microsoft also need a lesson on this!)

Get it right and it has my vote.

Thanks for the quick reply.  In our case we will develop an export goods site with less than 10 main categories and maybe 25-30 subcategories.  I would like my users to see subcategories from home page but I find long lists of categories and subcategories unsightly and often confusing.  With flyouts (and drop down menus to an extent) the main and the subcategories serve as a filing system for the shopper that can be accessed readily and put away when not open - no scrolling, no navigation to category pages, no clutter.

Perhaps it is more personal preference but I see the fly-out as a great method for a user to get a sense of content while also adding a little zest to a static page.  I would say if it is easier for the user, it is better for my business; if that means more difficulty in design or slightly slower loading time then perhaps it is a small compromise.

In any event, I am sure interested in fly-out menus if anyone can help.  I have no problem submitting a request for a quote if this is needed.

Just for fun I will post this link to a site that I find very beautiful (http://www.saffronrouge.com/site/home.html) though I think not CCP.  This is a very good use of fly-out for managing subcategories.  She has also listed standalone main categories on the home page but I think not as effective as the fly-out; if she were to list all subcategories on Home the site aesthetics would lose out.  Many appealing design and marketing ideas to be gleaned from this site for those who are interested.  I am looking forward to seeing the CCP 6 sites forum and hope we will see a good amount of design discussion.  Take good care.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

This is something I plan on working on for CCP6 after the release of the next update for the software (planned for next week).

The flyouts are in the new management interface which is currently live.

Re: Drop down Menu For Categories

That would have to be implemented on the frontend as a custom job as your requirements and how to include that info in your skin will be custom to your situation.  If interested, submit a quote request here: https://kryptronic.com/khxc/ccp0-displa … ustom.html
