Now I know that this isn't something that a lot of retailers do, but it's becoming very commonplace in the the automotive market. For those not familiar with the procedure, essentially I would tell a car club that if I have interest at 10 or more buyers for a particular product, I will lower the price to another specified amount.
Example -
A set of coilovers from my store will normally run $1,500.00. If I get 10 buyers to commit (or sign up) I can lower the price to $1,400.00 plus free shipping.
What I need is a way for people to visit my site, set up their account, and then 'sign up' for the group buy. Then the customer's name (or part of it) shows up on the Group Buy page so that people can see how far away from completion the buy is. Then, once the buy is finished, I can close out the group buy and bill the customers.
I hope this isn't asking for too much. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

I was hoping to be able to bill the customers directly through the shopping cart system once the group buy fills up. Then the customer has the option of paying directly through the site or phoning in payment (which I believe I can enter through the shopping cart in its current form).
Thanks for the reply!

If available we could use this system for wholesale sales to our retail dealers.

Anyone else want this? I'm still extremely interested in getting this. I'd be using it on a regular basis.

I know it's been a good long while since I've brought this up, but I would like to revisit the possibility of adding this to the power of the CCP6 at least for automotive web sites. I'm also interested in having this done as a custom mod if we can't get enough support to justify having it as an update. Unfortunately, I've not had enough time to research coding the item myself, and my XHTML/PHP skills have waned over the last couple of years.
The main purpose:
I host a lot of group buys on automotive forums that I participate in and sponsor. The main point of offering a group buy to the public is to offer wholesale pricing due to a number of guaranteed sales of a particular product.
Items for the mod:
A page or product link that I can post so that the customer can enter the following information:
- Name/Address
- Referring Forum
- User name from the referring forum
- Quantity of product to purchase
- Some sort of page the a customer can display the current *live* status of how many people have committed to the GB (eliminates time to have to frequently update on the forum)
I know that some of the features are already inherent in CCP6 for some of these items (account management) but I don't know how to add the additional fields to the account manager for referring forums/username or how to do a display page to track the GB customers.
Any help/feedback on this?

From the responses over time it sounds like a custom mod would be the route to take on this one. I'd never heard of what you describe until you brought it up
I can't imagine there being enough demand to justify adding it to the core of CCP.

Ok, then then next question for me to ask would be...
How do I go about getting this mod created for me? My install of CCP6 is currently unmodifed.
Thanks for the quick reply Dave.
