Entering Sales Tax Rates

I'm trying to figure out how I can enter the appropriate sales tax rate for purchases made from the state in which my business is conducted (CA).  California sales tax is specifiy to the county in which the purchase is made and there quite a few counties.  Is there a easy way to seet this up in CCP?

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

It's not exactly simple, but a working method has been discussed before.  Check out this thread: .  And for figuring out the taxes you collected from each county using this method, check out this thread: .  Boy am I glad I moved my business out of California before things really got going :-)

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

Wait a minute. Isn't the "purchase made" in the county where your business operates, not where the customer resides?

If you believe otherwise, can you please provide a link to supporting documentation. I've shopped online a LOT and have never encountered a site where they charged sales tax based on my county, only my state.

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

I operated for a time in CA and I always charged the sales tax rate of the county my business was in.  But to be perfectly honest, I just made that assumption and never saw any documentation one way or the other.  The guys in Georgia seem quite sure that the tax is based on the shipping destination, but of course that doesn't mean diddly in CA.

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

According to a person I spoke w/ at the Board of Equlization.  The tax rate for the county in which the business operates is the correct tax rate for any mail order type purchases made in CA.  Apparently, I was giving some misinformation from in the initial posting.  Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

We are required to collect local taxes (city, county) for customers residing where we operate our business. Check your state and local regulations.

Re: Entering Sales Tax Rates

I just emailed and got this response:

The rate you charge is based on two factors: 1) where title transfers to
the buyer, and 2) whether or not you are "engaged in business" in the
city/county where the goods will be shipped.  Title transfers is almost
always the destination where the goods are shipped.

What does that mean?  It means that if you ship anywhere in Marin
County, you must charge 7.75% (because you are engaged in business
there).  If you ship outside Marin County, you are only required to
charge 7.25%, unless you are engaged in business where you are shipping.
