Paypal Website Pro Challenges

I've been attempting to get PP Website Pro up and running for over a week without success. Considering PP's poor documentation and the INABILITY to print out their manuals; considering their incredibly POOR tech support (it took six emails back and forth to get an answer to the simple question as to which directory the certificate should be placed); considering their arrogance and don't give a damn attitude, I have to wonder why I'm beating my head against the wall!

One of the developers I occasionally hire to assist in maintaining my CCP51 site has indicated he has encountered similar arrogance from PP. And considering Nick's trials and tribulations in getting it integrated into CCP51, I suspect he has similar distasteful feelings towards PP.

My question is simply this: have others encountered similar problems with PP in general and with PP Website pro in particular? And if so, did you just "chuck it" like I've decided to do?

Thanks for any thoughts on this topic!

Re: Paypal Website Pro Challenges

Hi McGrats,

We terminated using PayPal for several reasons.
1 - Their fees are greater than our other processing company.
2 - Only about 1% of our orders were paid with PayPal.
3 - They were unprofessional when trying to settle a dispute we filed with another merchant. E.g., they did not inform us of their decision and did not give us a chance to counter. We did not receive the product and had proof that we did not have the product, yet PayPal sided with the merchant.

After terminating their services, we see no difference in sales.

They are good for startup companies who are testing the waters. Once you have your feet on the ground, you really don't need them.

Thanks for the response! Although I haven't been using their basic service long enough to encounter the problems you describe, I don't want to go there either. I've had their basic service on my website (payments from a PP account) but have never had anyone use them... everyone's to date has used either Visa or MC.

Re: Paypal Website Pro Challenges

I have been using the standard Paypal function exclusively and have recently tried to add the new Pro functions - still working on it!

I have many customers who call in their orders since they want to avoid Paypal or call in after trying to go through Paypal and having it not work for them.

Any recommendations for processors that work better with CCP? I like that Paypal has the easy shipping fuction and the new Pro Direct looks like it will work well if I can get it going.

Thanks,
Jess

If you succeed, let us in on the secret <groan>, maybe others will reconsider their positions. Personally, I doubt if I'll ever waste the time trying to get either PP Website Standard or Pro up again. I've been using Authorize Net without any problems so I've decided to follow the old axiom: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Re: Paypal Website Pro Challenges

I spent a lot of time comtemplating using paypal's website payments pro. After reading this, and many other fourms (including the paypal forum on ebay), I decided against it. I actually signed up for it already, as I had a paypal business account. I will need to let them know I won't be using that service. One of the main reasons I chose CCP as my store software was because it had the integration for paypal website payments pro. Guess I won't be needing that functionality now.

I think what turned me off the most was their reputation for lousy customer service, their non-existant support in dispute matters, freezing of accounts (or at least portions of it) for very little reason, and lately, turning down valid credit cards through their API. I believe you cannot take an order where shipping and billing don't match. I might be wrong on that one. The virtual terminal was a plus, but I got that through my current merchant account, which uses linkpoint API. I think paypal has a lot to learn in dealing with merchants that use online credit card processing. I will offer paypal as a choice on my website. I use it myself on occassion, but I'm hoping it won't get major use, other than direct, or bank transfers.

Re: Paypal Website Pro Challenges

I don't know why, but I am not charged for the Virtual Terminal at YourPay.com (Linkpoint) whereas Authorize.net charges us. I don't know how YourPay gets funded, but I haven't seen them transfer money from my bank to them. They may be funded through other services.

YourPay.com has all the bells and whistles of Authorize.net.

Don't be fooled. You can use any Virtual Terminal service with any merchant account. It is your money to spend how you like. Most merchant accounts recommend a particular Virtual Terminal service because it is easiest for them.

Shop around when selecting a VT.

Re: Paypal Website Pro Challenges

There sure appears to be a consensus forming AGAINST using certain flavors of PayPal. At first I thought it was just me over-reacting to their poor tech support. Now I know that with the exception of their basic PP, I'll steer clear of their other offerings!

Thanks to all for your help and input!
